When the opportunity arose, the young couple did not hesitate; the corner apartment next door to their own increasingly cramped one went up for sale, and they decided to buy it. The newly acquired, somewhat run-down

typical Berlin old-style apartment

was merged with the existing one. In addition to the overall renovation, the main focus was on relocating the kitchen within the new living space. It needed to be kept as a functional combined kitchen and dining area, whilst providing a generous enough space for the many regular guests.

The only trace of the divide between the two formerly separate apartments is the new “old” timber floorboards added at the site of the

original partition.

The wall between the dining room and kitchen was removed. The new level integrates technical utilities such as the underfloor heating, extraction fan, and electrics. The two

monolithic kitchen units

extend beyond the opening into the dining room.

By opening up one of the walls between the kitchen and the living room, spatial connections and

new visual relationships

were created.

The minimal, almost

graphic design

of the kitchen is complemented by a work of art belonging to the owners.

Bath and kitchen

stand back-to-back and are therefore made from the same materials.

The new guest bathroom

has been kept small, but efficient and beautiful.

In addition to the renovation of the kitchen and bathroom, the entire living space has been

completely renovated.

Sunken sockets, integrated light switches, and subtle recessed handles are just a few of the

kitchen details

that were precision designed together with carpenter Sebastian Kottmair.

A dream in black. The new kitchen resembles a sculpture. Or is this just a reference to

Space Odyssey 2001?

New tiles, as well as wall sockets and switches, were chosen in a

style fitting the overall concept.

Depending on the light and the angle of view, the oiled black MDF of the kitchen can transform; sometimes appearing dull, glossy, or even reflective.
