The new Wilhelm-Hausenstein-Gymnasium was completed in September 2024 after six years of planning and construction. A graphic design was sought for the wayfinding system in the building that offers good orientation, speaks its own language, but is still subordinate to the architecture. Together with the two graphic designers Silke Weigl and Sebastian Struch, IFUB* was able to design the

signage

and oversee its implementation.

The basic shapes

of the graphic design are derived from the architecture. The four learning houses are grouped around the central building like the leaves of a shamrock. The organic shapes of the learning houses were each combined with a matching color and thus ensure good orientation on the overview plan. As a lot of red was planned inside and outside the building, complementary shades of green were chosen.

The graphics are designed from the outlines of the building sections overlaid with an

oversized number

for the floor or letter of the building section. A simple font and specially designed icons in dark green were combined for detailed information.

The letter of the house was used

at the entrances

to the individual houses. The graphic here wraps around the wall on the inside to illustrate the entrance.

The design continues in the stairwells and is combined here with the

floor numbers.

The principle is also continued on the floors. This way,

at a glance,

you can see which house and which floor you are in, as well as which uses are located there.

Separate icons were developed for

the WCs,

which were attached to the doors.

Additional

icons

were designed for special uses - such as a changing room here - which blend in playfully with the general signage, but also make the use immediately recognizable.

Graphic elements also appear in the underground parking. Here, the stairs and the exit were designed with

bicycle graphics.

The colors in the underground parking were also based on the overarching

color palette,

which not only harmonizes perfectly with red, but also with exposed concrete.
