Small interventions can have a big impact. When the IFUB * was asked to help

design a new apartment

within the framework of a joint project in Munich’s Schwabing district, it at first seemed it was “just” about creating the kitchen. It soon became clear, however, that a kitchen does not always have to be “just” a kitchen...

In the original plans, the open-plan living, dining, and kitchen area was directly connected to the entrance hall. The solution to this unstructured set up was a

large built-in unit,

adding functional definition to the space. Suddenly, there is now even a place for a wardrobe and plenty of storage. Not only are kitchen devices cleverly hidden away, but keeping the whole apartment orderly becomes quick and convenient.

The white built-in unit acts as part of the wall. The effect is intentionally interrupted in the

kitchen,

where carefully selected shades of green loosen up the bareness of the kitchen niche, and an oak worktop picks up the tones of the oak parquet floor.

Since the large built-in unit separates the living area from the entrance hall, it was elegantly utilized on the entrance-side as an integrated

wardrobe.

With a family with two children, generous storage space is always welcome.

The

handles

were cut directly from the cupboard fronts and painted in the color of the wall. So despite being positioned discreetly in the background, they are still an eye-catching feature.

fresh greens
